Alberta RCMP investigates Friday morning homicide in Banff

A person died in Banff Friday morning and Alberta RCMP is investigating it as a homicide.

It’s the first homicide in the mountain town in more than 30 years. May 1990 marked the previous homicide in Banff.

Banff RCMP were called to a local bar on Banff Avenue around 2:26 a.m. after reports of a fight.

Mounties found an injured 26-year-old man at the scene. He was rushed to Mineral Springs Hospital where he later died from his injuries, according to an EMS spokesperson.

EMS also said the man suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was in serious condition before it “rapidly deteriorated”.

Global News confirmed the name of the victim is Ethan Enns-Goneau and the incident was a stabbing that happened at Dancing Sasquatch.

Enns-Goneau worked at a local restaurant, and is remembered as a soccer and high school rugby player.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Enns-Goneau, police said.

John-Christopher Arrizza is in custody and is set to appear in Canmore court on Aug. 10 via CCTV.

The Town of Banff announced it was co-ordinating support services for the community, including a drop-in support session in the town council’s chambers on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In addition to helping mourners connect with professional supports, mental health supports will be on-site late Friday.

Banff’s Mayor Corrie DiManno took to social media to send her condolences to the family and friends of the “long-time local resident.”

“We are shocked, angry, and heartbroken that a senseless act has robbed us of a cherished Banffite, and we mourn this immense loss with all who knew and loved him,” the mayor said in a statement.

The Alberta RCMP major crimes unit will lead the investigation with help from Banff RCMP and the RCMP forensic identification unit.

RCMP said an update will be provided when further details can be released.
