5 songs you must hear this week: 25 March 2019

Re-release (Fearless)
Recommended If You Like: Franz Ferdinand, The 1975, COIN

The awkwardly named Salt Lake City duo first released this song in 2017 as part of a nonsensically named EP entitled 1981 Extended Play when it was first issued on the oddly named None You Jerk Records. Now that the band is now working with a different label, it’s been decided that the track deserves a second chance. We’ll see what happens.

2. Smith and Thell, Forgive Me Friend
Telephone Wires EP (Playground Music)
RIYL: Sweden

With less than 10 million people, Sweden continues to be an international musical powerhouse which, as the accountants say, over-index when it comes to net exports. (Maria Jane) Smit and (Victor) Thell are already stars in their homeland with a platinum award for this EP. Let’s see if this translates to the rest of the world.

3. BAD CHILD, Breathing Fire
Single (21 Entertainment/UMG)
RIYL: Genre-bending

Another ALL CAPS artist, BAD CHILD is a 19-year-old self-taught multi-instrumentalist, singer, and producer from Toronto who is into a genre-bending (alt/hip-hop/art-rock) sort of sound. In addition to a Canadian record deal, he’s been signed to labels in both the US and the UK. One to watch for sure.

4. Marshmello ft. CHVRCHES, Here with Me
Single (Universal)
RIYL: Deadmau5, Skrillex, Martin Garrix

If your kid says he/she wants to put a bucket over their head and work as an EDM DJ, let ‘em. Marshello is definitely hot right now (have you seen his Fortnite set?) so when he calls, people call back. In this case, he asked if Scottish indie rockers CHVRCHES would be interested in collaborating on a new single. I believe the answer was “Duh. What do you need?”

5. Ewan Currie, I’d Like to Live in California
Out of My Mind (Warner)
RIYL: The Sheepdogs, obviously

Ewan, he of The Sheepdogs, evidently has more music to offer than what can be channeled through the band or through the BROS project with brother Shamus. His first solo album leans slightly towards the singer-songwriter side of things. We’ll get to investigate the whole thing when it arrives March 29.
