On an average morning in Calgary, it is unlikely that you will see Iron Man walking down 8 Avenue with Superman at his side. However, this past weekend, on the morning of April 27, that is exactly what happened because it was the official kick-off for the 2018 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo!
It all started with a POW, the annual Parade Of Wonders. This year’s parade had over 2,000 participants walking from 8 Avenue all the way down Stephen Avenue to Olympic Plaza for the opening ceremonies. The parade not only brings out the cosplayers (people who dress up as their favourite character from pop culture) of Calgary but also a huge audience; this year over 15,000 spectators came out to watch the Parade of Wonders.
After the march down Stephen Avenue, the two thousand participants ended up at Olympic Plaza where Nenshi greeted everyone including Megan Follow, Anne of Green Gables, and Steven Ogg, Walking Dead. The two celebrities were then white-hatted, a Calgary tradition only given to the most valued of guests. In order to receive a white hat, you have to promise to uphold Calgary’s standards of politeness and to be friendly to every person and critter that crosses your path. The two stars accepted this pledge and thus the 2018 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo was off to a great start!
Down at the Stampede grounds is where the actual party was happening, this year the Calgary Expo was filled to the brim with everything a little nerd could dream of. Celebrities ranging from Wil Wheaton to Lou Ferrigno, costume contests on the Saturday and panels where you could ask any question that came to mind. Even a few plot twists and secrets came out from some panel speakers…
My personal favourite part of the expo? The comics! There was no shortage of superhero content this year, every stall inside the market was covered top to bottom in superhero memorabilia and comics, new and old.
If you missed it, you’re gonna have to wait until next year to get your superhero fix. Or you can go catch Avengers: Infinity War which just had its biggest Canadian opening weekend of all time!
