Q107 welcome 54.40 to the Chrome Showroom at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino on October 2, 2021!
Formed in Tsawassen, BC, in 1979 by former high school classmates Neil Osborne (vocals, guitar) and Brad Merritt (bass). The group took its name from the slogan “54.40 or Fight!,” coined in 1848 by US president James Polk for a Manifest Destiny movement that believed the Canada-US border should be moved north to the 54th parallel, 40th minute (the present-day border of Canada and Alaska).
54.40 has been likened by critics to American group R.E.M. and hailed as the first of Canada’s post-punk rock groups to be signed to an American record deal. “Nice to Luv You” (1992) was their first hit single, propelling the album Dear Dear to platinum status.
54.40’s best-known songs include “Baby Ran,””One Gun,””She La,””Ocean Pearl,””Lies to Me” and “I Go Blind.”
